As Kenya gears up for a reshuffling in its Cabinet, one name stands out among the nominees: Rebecca Miano. With a distinguished career in public service and significant achievements under her belt, Miano is poised to take on the role of Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary.
A Career Steeped in Public Service
Rebecca Miano’s journey in public service spans several decades, marked by a series of pivotal roles that highlight her expertise and dedication. Currently, she is among the 10 Cabinet Secretary (CS) nominees awaiting clearance from Parliament. If approved, she will be stepping into a new role in the Cabinet, following her previous stint as the Trade CS.
Miano’s career trajectory is both impressive and diverse. Before her nomination as Tourism CS, she was the Trade CS from October last year. Her role in the Ministry of Trade was instrumental in various high-impact initiatives, including the signing and ratification of the Kenya-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). This treaty ensures that Kenyan products have duty-free, quota-free access to the 27 European Union countries, a significant boost for Kenya’s trade sector.
A Rich Background in Law and Corporate Management
Miano’s professional background is rooted in law and corporate management. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Nairobi and a Master’s in Comparative Law from Australian National University. Her early career saw her working with prestigious law firms both in Kenya and Australia, including Musyoka Annan & Company Advocates and Slater and Gordon.
Her legal expertise was further honed during her tenure at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), where she worked as an assistant legal officer before advancing to senior roles. In 1998, Miano joined Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), where she held several key positions, including Senior Legal Officer, Principal Legal Officer, and eventually Company Secretary and Director in charge of Corporate Affairs.
Miano’s leadership capabilities were evident as she climbed the ranks at KenGen, culminating in her role as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer from 2017 until her appointment to the Cabinet. Her tenure at KenGen was marked by her ability to manage complex legal and corporate affairs effectively.
Achievements and Contributions
As the Trade CS, Miano spearheaded several landmark projects. Her efforts led to the establishment of Flagship Export Processing Zones in various counties, including Busia, Eldoret, Muranga, and Kirinyaga. These zones are expected to create approximately 50,000 jobs per county and enhance the value addition of local produce for export markets. Additionally, Miano played a crucial role in organizing EPA sensitization sessions across multiple regions in Kenya, fostering a deeper understanding of trade agreements among local stakeholders.
What Lies Ahead
Rebecca Miano’s nomination as Tourism and Wildlife CS comes at a time when the sector is poised for significant growth and transformation. Her extensive experience in public service, coupled with her track record of successful projects and initiatives, positions her well to drive the agenda for tourism and wildlife conservation in Kenya. As she prepares for her vetting, Miano’s career achievements and contributions reflect her capability to excel in her new role. If approved, she will undoubtedly bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, steering it towards new heights.
