Nairobi Governor Sakaja faced a tumultuous reception during his visit to Toi Market, where a devastating fire had razed several stalls and houses, leading to the tragic loss of four lives.
The fire, which started around 4 am on Saturday, is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.
As Governor Sakaja toured the market, promising to utilize county disaster funds to compensate affected traders, he encountered a group of angry residents.
The residents, accusing him of managing the county poorly, pelted stones and chanted his name, necessitating his security guards to shield and quickly usher him away from the area.
In response to the tragedy, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna confirmed the loss of four lives, having spoken with area MP Peter Orero.
He pledged support to the affected families and businesses, and assured residents of the county government’s commitment to preventing such incidents in the future.
This incident highlights the growing frustration among residents over recurring market fires and the perceived inefficacies in the county’s management and disaster response.
