The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced the introduction of a new series of banknotes, featuring several updates.
These updated notes, which will be circulated alongside the current ones, affect all denominations.
Including the one hundred shillings (Sh100), two hundred shillings (Sh200), five hundred shillings (Sh500), and one thousand shillings (Sh1,000).
Among the notable changes are the new signatures of the current CBK Governor, Kamau Thugge, and Treasury Principal Secretary, Dr. Chris Kiptoo.
The updated year of print is 2024, and the new banknotes will include a new security thread with color changes specific to each denomination.
The CBK has started the release of the updated series with the Sh1,000 note.
Other denominations will follow progressively in the coming months.
Despite these updates, the rest of the features of the banknotes will remain the same as those introduced in the series issued in 2019.
This phased approach ensures a smooth transition while maintaining the security and integrity of the currency.
The initiative to update the banknotes is part of an ongoing effort to enhance the security features of Kenyan currency.
The previous generation of banknotes was launched during the 2019 Madaraka Day celebrations by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and former CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge.
This update follows the December 2018 introduction of new generation coins, further modernizing Kenya’s currency and ensuring its continued reliability and trustworthiness.
