Connie Chiume, a renowned South African actress best known for her roles in the Marvel film Black Panther, passed away at the age of 72.
She died at a Johannesburg hospital following a medical procedure, as announced by her family.
Chiume was a celebrated figure in South African television, appearing in popular shows such as Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Gomora.
She began acting in 1989 with Inkom’ Edla Yodwa and gained international fame with her role in Black Panther and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Chiume was also well-regarded for her role as Sarabi in Beyoncé’s Disney musical film based on The Lion King.
Her acting career earned several awards, including an NTVA Avanti Award in 2000 and a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) in 2009.
Born in Welkom, Free State, Chiume initially trained as a nurse before becoming a teacher and eventually significantly impacted South African television.
