A horrific road accident occurred on Tuesday morning, August 20, 2024, near Salgaa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway. The multiple-vehicle collision resulted in 13 fatalities and injured 55 others, some critically.
Around 5 am, a passenger service vehicle (PSV) bus, traveling from Kericho to Nakuru, lost control. The bus crashed into barriers and ended up in a ditch.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver struggled with brake failure while navigating the steep stretch in the Migaa area, known for its dangerous roads.
Among the deceased, five women, seven men, and an infant lost their lives. Emergency services rushed the injured to hospitals in Molo, Rongai, and Nakuru City.
Doctors described several survivors as critical, with many undergoing emergency surgeries for severe injuries.
One survivor, who wished to remain anonymous, shared that the bus had mechanical issues since the journey began in Kisumu. The driver had stopped in Kericho at 1 am for repairs, but passengers noticed the brakes failing.
Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati confirmed the accident and urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during the rainy season.
He stressed the need to avoid speeding, reckless overtaking, and drunk driving.
The police will conduct a thorough investigation into the accident’s cause. They will inspect the bus and assess the conditions of the road.
Officials moved the bodies of the deceased to Molo District Hospital Mortuary, while tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles to Salgaa Police Station.
