Kenya Power announced that over 5.64 million prepaid (token) electricity customers have updated their meters ahead of the deadline set for the end of this month.
In a press statement, Kenya Power’s Managing Director, Joseph Siror, reminded all remaining prepaid customers to update their meters to avoid service interruption.
Kenya Power launched the Update Token Meter Yako Campaign in mid-June 2024, urging prepaid customers to update their meter software for free to ensure continuous access to electricity.
Customers are required to purchase at least one unit of electricity to receive the update codes, which are then entered into the meter using instructions provided via SMS.
The company emphasized that customers must load all previously purchased tokens before updating their meters, as meters that are not updated by the deadline will no longer accept electricity tokens.
The meter update exercise is part of a global effort targeting all prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a secure universal method for transferring tokens to prepaid meters.
Kenya Power has adopted a phased approach to prevent system overloads, ensuring smoother access to update codes and continued electricity services.
In addition to SMS notifications, customers can access their prepaid meter update codes through Kenya Power’s self-service platform *977#, which also serves as a backup if the SMS is lost.
