President William Ruto is set to launch the Nairobi River regeneration project today at 10 am in the Korogocho-Kariobangi/Lucky Summer area.
This initiative marks a significant step towards rehabilitating the Nairobi River catchment basin, which has faced severe environmental degradation over the years.
The project aims not only to restore the river’s ecosystem but also to construct new housing for families residing along the riverbanks, addressing both environmental and social challenges.
The Nairobi River Commission, chaired by Dr. Pamela Olet, was established in February 2023 to spearhead efforts in reclaiming and revitalizing the rivers of Nairobi.
This commission is tasked with coordinating various stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, and private sector partners, to ensure a comprehensive approach to restoration and sustainable development of the riverine environment.
The commission emphasizes that restoring the river is not merely a cleanup effort; it involves a holistic examination of the entire basin and the factors affecting it, including pollution and land use practices.
The Nairobi River regeneration project represents a critical opportunity for the city to address long-standing environmental issues while improving the quality of life for its residents.
The collaboration between the government, the Nairobi River Commission, and community stakeholders is essential for the project’s success, as it seeks to create a sustainable urban environment that benefits both people and nature.
