Protests erupted in Nairobi this morning as traders from Marikiti and Wakulima Markets blocked key roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD).
The demonstrations were in response to the Nairobi County Government’s recent decision to relocate them to the newly designated Kangundo Road Market.
Traders argue that this move will severely impact their businesses by distancing them from their customer base in the city center.
Protests starting early Thursday caused major traffic disruptions on Haile Selassie Avenue, Jogoo Road, and Landhies Road.
Many early morning commuters found themselves stranded as the roads were blocked with rocks and burning tires.
Public transport, particularly matatus, had to divert, exacerbating congestion in other areas of the city.
The Nairobi County Government announced the relocation plan in a public notice dated September 10, 2024, as part of a broader strategy to decongest the CBD.
The notice announced that traders selling potatoes, pineapples, oranges, and onions must move to the Kangundo Road Market, which will offer more space and better parking facilities.
However, traders expressed frustration over the lack of consultation regarding the relocation, feeling blindsided by the decision.
During the protests, traders chanted slogans and held banners, voicing their discontent with the county government’s approach.
One trader, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the relocation would not only disrupt their businesses but also diminish their livelihoods.
Many protesters echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for the government to engage with them before making such significant decisions.
As the situation escalated, clashes broke out between the protesters and police, leading to the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Authorities are increasing security presence in the area as they work to restore order and clear the blocked roads.
