Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly criticized a faction of Mt Kenya MPs who have pledged their support to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, labeling them as “sell-outs” and accusing them of betrayal.
Speaking at the Central Kenya ASK Show in Nyeri on September 13, Gachagua expressed his discontent with the MPs, likening their actions to a Kikuyu fable involving a hyena and a hare, where the hare cleverly avoids harm while the hyena bears the consequences.
Growing Rift in Mt Kenya Politics
Gachagua’s remarks come amid a growing rift within the Mt Kenya region’s political landscape, as at least 48 MPs have recently declared their allegiance to Kindiki, positioning him as their link to the national government.
This endorsement has been perceived as a significant blow to Gachagua’s influence in the region, as he has long positioned himself as the key representative of Mt Kenya interests within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Allegations of Personal Greed
During his address, Gachagua claimed that personal greed motivated the dissenting MPs instead of the collective interests of the Mt Kenya community.
He emphasized that their actions threaten to undermine the unity of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
He stated, underscoring his determination to stand firm against what he views as political maneuvering aimed at dividing the region.
Despite the ongoing tensions, Gachagua assured his supporters that he would respond strategically to the political challenges he faces, stating,
Uncertain Future for Kenya Kwanza
The political landscape in Mt Kenya has become increasingly complex, with Gachagua’s critics accusing him of fostering divisions while he attempts to consolidate power.
Some of his allies have defended him, urging him to focus on development instead of getting distracted by political noise.
As the political rivalry intensifies, the implications for the Kenya Kwanza administration and the future of Mt Kenya politics remain uncertain.
Gachagua will closely monitor the perceived betrayal and actively work to maintain unity in the region as the 2027 elections approach.
