The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended two notorious robbery suspects, aged 19 and 22, during a dramatic operation in Utange village, Mombasa.
The suspects, identified as Mohammed Ibrahim Shaban and Abdulaziz Ali Ogutu, have gained infamy for their violent motorcycle robberies in the region.
The DCI reported that the suspects were planning another attack when officers raided their hideout on Monday, September 16, 2024.
The operation followed a series of violent incidents linked to the duo, including a fatal robbery that occurred on July 18.
Their reign of terror had instilled fear among residents in areas like Majengo, Makupa, and Tononoka.
CCTV footage captured the suspects attempting to rob a man seated near his vehicle while using his phone. Armed with a panga, they tried to intimidate the victim.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the man fought back using a mop as his weapon, forcing the suspects to flee on their motorcycle.
Evidence Recovered
Following their arrest, DCI officers searched the suspects’ hideout and recovered an array of weapons and stolen items.
The haul included a panga, three knives, two mobile phones, and an ID card belonging to Yusuf Amani Yusuf.
This evidence proving the violent nature of their crimes and the threat they posed to the community.
Community Reaction
Local residents have expressed relief at the swift action taken by the DCI, as they have long lived in fear of these robberies.
The community is now calling for increased police presence and more robust measures to ensure their safety. As one resident noted,
The arrest of Shaban and Ogutu marks a significant victory for law enforcement in Mombasa.
As investigations continue, authorities are determined to dismantle any remaining networks involved in violent crime.
