Tensions flared on Friday as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua launched a scathing attack on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja during a roadside rally at Wakulima Market.
The conflict centers around the county’s controversial plan to relocate traders from the market to Kangundo Road, a decision that has sparked significant unrest among the traders.
Gachagua’s Criticism of Sakaja
At the rally, Gachagua questioned Sakaja’s motives, asking why there were no issues with the traders during the election campaign.
His remarks highlighted a growing frustration with what he perceives as a lack of support for local livelihoods.
Gachagua urged Sakaja to engage in dialogue with the traders instead of enforcing eviction notices. He added,
Sakaja’s Defense of Relocation Plans
In response, Governor Sakaja defended his administration’s decision to relocate traders as part of efforts to decongest the Central Business District and improve traffic flow.
He argued that relocating traders to Kangundo Road would provide them with better facilities and more space for their businesses.
However, Gachagua countered these claims by pointing out that many traders in Wakulima Market represent various tribes, and he rejected accusations of tribalism directed at him.
The situation escalated on September 12 when traders clashed with police while resisting eviction orders.
Many traders believe that moving to Kangundo Road would severely impact their livelihoods, as it is further from the city center and less accessible to customers.
