On September 22, 2024, fishermen discovered a canoe off the coast of Senegal. The vessel contained at least 30 decomposing bodies.
Authorities believe these individuals were migrants trying to reach the Spanish Canary Islands in search of better opportunities.
How The Bodies Were Discovered
After the fishermen alerted authorities, the Senegalese military towed the boat to the Port of Dakar.
Early on September 23, a team of doctors, firefighters, and sanitation workers arrived to recover and identify the bodies. Unfortunately, the advanced state of decomposition made their efforts difficult.
Many individuals risk their lives to cross the dangerous Atlantic route to reach Europe. In recent months, more people have departed from Senegal due to unemployment, conflict, and poverty.
The journey to the Canary Islands spans over 1,500 kilometers (approximately 950 miles) and poses significant dangers from strong currents and overcrowded boats.
Ongoing Investigations
Currently, Senegalese authorities are investigating this tragedy. They aim to determine the boat’s origin and confirm the total number of individuals aboard.
The navy has promised to share further information as investigations progress.
In August 2024, the Senegalese government announced a ten-year plan aimed at combating illegal migration and enhancing local support.
