Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has publicly supported the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
This is a significant moment, as Mutua is the first member of the National Executive to weigh in on Gachagua’s ongoing troubles.
The motion to impeach Gachagua was officially tabled in the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 1, by Kibwezi MP Mwengi Mutuse.
It alleges multiple violations, including gross misconduct and corruption, and has garnered support from 291 MPs, surpassing the required threshold for discussion.
Mutua’s Support
Mutua emphasized that the grounds for Gachagua’s impeachment are valid and necessary for the country. He criticized Gachagua’s alleged tribal rhetoric, stating it threatens national unity.
The curse of Africa has always been tribalism and corruption,
He believes that this motion is not merely political but essential for preserving Kenya’s integrity.
Allegations Against Gachagua
The impeachment motion outlines serious charges against Gachagua, including:
- Gross violations of the constitution
- Reckless and inflammatory remarks
- Corrupt acquisition of assets exceeding KSh 5.7 billion
- Violations of national and international laws
Mutuse accused Gachagua of inciting violence and engaging in corrupt practices that undermine the nation’s stability. He stated that such actions cannot be tolerated from any leader.
Following the admission of the motion, a debate will occur in the National Assembly, followed by a vote.
For Gachagua to be impeached, at least two-thirds of MPs must support the motion. If successful, the matter will then move to the Senate for further deliberation.
Gachagua’s Response
