Dorcas Agik Oduor has made history as Kenya’s first female Attorney General. Parliament approved her appointment on August 14, 2024, after President William Ruto’s Cabinet reshuffle amid Finance Act protests.
Oduor brings over 30 years of legal experience. She has served as the Secretary of Public Prosecutions and holds the Senior Counsel title.
Oduor’s background includes significant roles in commissions and cases, showcasing her commitment to justice and the rule of law.
During her swearing-in at State House, Oduor vowed to uphold the constitution and remain faithful. She promised to serve with honor and respect.
Head of Public Service Felix Koskei lauded Oduor’s integrity, competence, and commitment to the rule of law.
Oduor is the first female Attorney General in kenya, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations.
Her nomination was unanimously approved by the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments, led by Speaker Moses Wetangula.
As Attorney General, Oduor will serve as the principal legal advisor to the government. She will guide legal policy, represent the state in court, provide policy guidance, coordination, and oversight on legal matters.
Oduor will also offer advice and opinions to the president and heads of executive departments when requested.
Oduor’s appointment is part of President Ruto’s efforts to create a broad-based government.
The President has also nominated Beatrice Askul Moe as Cabinet Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development, making her the first female Cabinet Secretary from Turkana County.
The approval of Oduor and Askul sets the stage for their swearing-in, joining the 19 Cabinet Secretaries sworn in last week.
With Oduor’s historic appointment, Kenya joins a growing list of African countries that have had female Attorneys General, including Algeria’s Kaddache Ghania in 2008.
