Esther Onyango’s story is a remarkable example of perseverance and resilience.
Growing up in the Mukuru slums in South B, Esther spent 17 years in harsh conditions.
Her family’s fortunes began to change in 2007 when her brother, Patrick Oboya, signed with a football club in the Czech Republic, Europe.
This significant achievement in her brother’s career led to a transformative moment for her family.
Esther recalled, their family’s relacation to Madaraka Estate as the first thing Oboya did.
Years later, Esther found her path to success through her passion for cooking, a skill she attributes to her late mother.
She launched an online business in March 2023, initially starting with a humble mandazi kibanda (street food stall).
Her business has since grown into a flourishing enterprise.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “I thank God every day for blessing my hands with this amazing gift.”
Esther’s experience in the hospitality industry, particularly during her three years working at KFC, proved valuable in shaping her business.
However, her entry into the business world was not without challenges.
Her first attempt at selling chapati online faced harsh criticism on social media.
Rather than being discouraged, Esther sought help and found a mentor in a woman named Mirriam.
This mentorship and Esther’s perseverance quickly bore fruit. By her second order, the feedback she received was overwhelmingly positive.
This marked a significant milestone in her business journey, leading to her first international client.
Esther reflected on her accomplishments with pride, saying, “I know my late mum is smiling down on me, watching her little girl do what she loved most—cooking.”
