A new phenomenon has taken over Kenya’s entertainment scene with the rise of a fake Vybz Kartel impersonator known as DonAfrikaa.
This impersonator has gained significant attention online, especially on TikTok, where he showcases his striking resemblance to the Jamaican dancehall icon.
Active on social media since early August 2024, DonAfrikaa began impersonating Vybz Kartel shortly after the artist’s release from prison.
His TikTok account, under the name MR MAVYBZ, features videos of him dressed in an all-white outfit and an orange bandana. This look closely resembles Vybz Kartel’s style upon his release.
This attire has become a signature look, drawing in fans who mistake him for the real artist.
On August 15, 2024, DonAfrikaa staged a fake concert outside the Parliament building in Nairobi. He claimed the event celebrated Vybz Kartel’s return to the music scene.
The concert attracted a crowd of curious onlookers and fans eager to take selfies with the impersonator.
Many were unaware they were interacting with a look-alike instead of the actual Vybz Kartel, known for his chart-topping hits and vibrant performances.
In his videos, DonAfrikaa often tags Vybz Kartel, expressing gratitude and excitement for the artist’s return. His antics have entertained fans and sparked discussions about celebrity culture in Kenya.
Impersonation of both local and international stars has become a growing trend. Recently, two individuals mimicking stars like Jason Derulo and Diamond Platnumz also made a stir online. Jason Derulo even commented on a humorous video featuring his impersonator.
Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Azim Palmer, regained his freedom just weeks before DonAfrikaa’s rise to fame.
Since his release, he has focused on his health and music career. He recently released a new 12-track project titled First Week Out.
