On Friday, August 31, Evans Chirchir, a National Treasury employee, was reported missing. His family grew concerned when he did not return home over the weekend.
They sought help from his colleagues, who claimed he had gone out with friends to Machakos.
After several days of searching hospitals and police stations, his family turned to the courts. They filed a habeas corpus application to compel the police to locate him.
However, on September 3, they discovered that authorities had found his body at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.
The discovery of Chirchir’s body raised many questions. His family and lawyers reported that he had received threats related to a KSh 286 million tender at the Exchequer. Philip Langat, the family’s counsel stated
They believe, therefore, that these threats may be connected to his mysterious death.
Lawyer Philip Keaton stated that Chirchir had expressed fears for his safety before his disappearance. He noted that the circumstances surrounding Chirchir’s death were suspicious.
The family confirmed that Chirchir’s body showed signs of a head injury; consequently, this added to their concerns about foul play.
During a court appearance, Keaton announced that they would withdraw their habeas corpus application. He explained that the situation had changed dramatically with the discovery of Chirchir’s body.
The family is now actively seeking justice and working to understand the events leading to his death.
Keaton called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Inspector General of Police to investigate the case thoroughly.
He emphasized the need for a quick and thorough inquiry into the circumstances of Chirchir’s death. Additionally, a post-mortem examination is scheduled for September 4 to determine the exact cause of death.
His family is left grieving and, consequently, demanding accountability and answers regarding his untimely death. Moreover, they hope that the investigation will uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice.
