Multimedia University students in Nairobi sparked significant unrest on September 17, 2024, as they protested against ongoing issues related to water scarcity and inadequate internet access.
The protests led to roadblocks on Magadi Road, causing major traffic disruptions in the area.
The demonstration was organized by student leader Naomi Oketch, who expressed frustration over the administration’s lack of response to their grievances.
Students reported that the university has been experiencing severe water shortages for weeks, with taps running dry and many hostels lacking basic amenities such as electricity and functional sockets.
Additionally, students highlighted the poor quality of internet connectivity, which has hindered their academic activities.
Fire Breaks Out Amid Protests
Amid the protests, a fire broke out in one of the university hostels, prompting panic among students and staff.
Many rushed to extinguish the flames using buckets of water while others appeared overwhelmed by the situation.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of fires occurring in educational institutions across Kenya, often resulting in significant damage to property and resources.
Oketch emphasized that despite numerous complaints about faulty electrical systems and insufficient study resources, the administration has failed to take necessary actions to address these problems.
