Early Life and Education
Rigathi Gachagua was born on February 28, 1965, in Ruguru village, Mathira, Nyeri County, Kenya. He grew up as the youngest of nine children in a polygamous family.
His parents played significant roles in the Mau Mau movement. His father served as a gun technician, while his mother delivered food and ammunition during the fight for independence.
Gachagua began his education at Kabiruini Primary School from 1971 to 1977. He then attended Kianyaga High School for his O-levels and A-levels.
In 1985, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Literature in 1988.
While at university, he led the Nyeri District University Students Association (NDUSA) and chaired the Association of Literature Students.
Early Career
After graduating, Gachagua started his career in public service. He briefly worked at the Ministry of Home Affairs & National Heritage.
In 1990, he joined the Administration Police Institute for paramilitary training. Following this training, he served as a District Officer Cadet in the Office of the President under Daniel arap Moi.
From 1991 to 1999, he worked as a District Officer in various districts, including Kakamega and Laikipia. His dedication earned him a position as a personal assistant to the Head of Public Service in 1991.
In 1999, he obtained an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration from the Kenya School of Government.
From 2001 to 2006, Gachagua worked closely with Uhuru Kenyatta when he served as Minister for Local Government. This experience provided him with valuable insights into governance.
Business Ventures
From 2007 to 2017, Gachagua focused on building his business portfolio. He successfully ventured into real estate and agriculture.
His entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to accumulate significant wealth during this period.
Political Career
Gachagua’s political career took off when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mathira Constituency in the 2017 general elections on a Jubilee Party ticket.
His election marked his return to active politics after years in business.
In the lead-up to the 2022 general elections, William Ruto selected Gachagua as his running mate under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.
The Ruto-Gachagua ticket campaigned on economic empowerment and unity among Kenyans. They won with just over 50% of the vote, leading to Gachagua’s swearing-in as Deputy President on September 13, 2022.
Role as Deputy President
As Deputy President, Gachagua has taken on various responsibilities within the government. He has spoken out about issues affecting ordinary Kenyans and has focused on economic empowerment initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods.
His role includes representing the president at functions and engaging with local communities.
Gachagua has promoted several initiatives to enhance agricultural productivity and support smallholder farmers.
He emphasizes grassroots engagement and advocates for policies that boost local industries.
Personal Life
Rigathi Gachagua is married to Dorcas Wanjiku Rigathi, a retired banker who is now an active pastor in Mathira.
The couple met during their university years in 1985 and married in 1989. They have two sons, Kevin and Keith.
Gachagua values family life and often shares insights about balancing public service with family responsibilities.
He actively participates in community development projects that uplift lives in Mathira and beyond.
