A Form Four student at Sironga Girls’ High School in Nyamira County died by suicide after jumping from the second floor of the school’s administration block.
This tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning while students prepared for the day.
School Principal Jane Nyanumba confirmed that the student, set to sit for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) next month, jumped as her classmates got ready. Nyanumba stated,
Witnesses described the student as quiet and noted she had shown no signs of distress before the incident.
The principal added,
Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner Florence Obunga learned about the incident from the principal at 6:30 AM.
Currently, investigators are gathering information about this tragic event, but the motive remains unclear. Meanwhile, students and staff struggle to cope with their loss.
West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
He emphasized the rising issue of mental health among youth, stating,
Police report an increase in suicide cases, with up to two incidents occurring daily.
The World Health Organization attributes these cases to various factors, including academic pressures, joblessness, and mental health issues.
As investigations continue, the school community mourns a promising life lost too soon.
