Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that some Members of Parliament (MPs) are receiving offers of Sh5 million to support an impeachment motion against him.
Speaking at a rally in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, on September 28, Gachagua alleged that Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Senator James Murango turned down cash offers.
He urged critics to stop pushing for his impeachment, saying,
Gachagua emphasized his election by the people, not by the president.
He added,
Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa announced plans to sponsor the impeachment motion. He claimed to have gathered 242 signatures from lawmakers in support of the motion.
He noted that the motion requires at least 116 signatures to table and 233 votes for approval in the National Assembly.
The political tension surrounding Gachagua’s potential impeachment has intensified as factions within the ruling coalition engage in lobbying efforts.
Reports indicate that some lawmakers have met secretly to discuss their strategies.
As the situation unfolds, the upcoming parliamentary session on October 1 will be crucial. The impeachment motion could lead to a significant political showdown within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
