Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently revealed a secret power-sharing agreement within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, benefiting key political figures like Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
During a press briefing on October 7, Gachagua argued that his honesty about this agreement led to an unfair impeachment motion against him, which he views as a politically motivated attack.
Gachagua highlighted that leaders established the power-sharing deal before the 2022 General Election. He criticized Wetang’ula for supporting his impeachment while being a signatory to the same agreement.
Gachagua stated,
He emphasized the need for transparency regarding the agreements made by political leaders.
Gachagua specifically noted that Kingi’s Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) received assurance for the Senate Speaker position under Article 8 of the power-sharing agreement.
He urged Kenyans to demand their rightful shares as outlined in these agreements, suggesting that many leaders have benefited while keeping these details hidden from their constituents.
Impeachment Proceedings
As Gachagua faces an impeachment motion backed by 291 MPs from both sides of the House, he defends himself against serious allegations.
These include gross violations of the Constitution and misconduct. The charges involve claims of unlawful acquisition of assets exceeding KSh 5 billion and violations of various national laws.
Gachagua described the impeachment process as a violation of the will of the people who elected him.
During the impeachment proceedings, special provisions have provided Gachagua with a VIP lounge and allocated seating within Parliament.
His defense team plans to present arguments against the allegations during a hearing that has garnered significant public attention.
Despite the tumultuous political landscape, Gachagua remains defiant. He asserts that he retains support from his constituents in Central Kenya.
He characterized the impeachment efforts as an “act of aggression” aimed at tarnishing his reputation and undermining his political career.
The upcoming days will be pivotal as Gachagua presents his defense and Parliament votes on whether to proceed with the impeachment.
