Background on Kithure Kindiki
Kithure Kindiki has been serving as the Interior CS for approximately two years and previously held the position of Senator for Tharaka Nithi County for two terms, totaling ten years.
His political journey includes being a favored candidate to be Ruto’s running mate in the 2022 elections, although he ultimately chose Gachagua due to considerations regarding their compatibility.
In light of Gachagua’s impeachment, Kindiki emerged as a strong contender for the deputy presidency. He received endorsements from at least 69 elected leaders from the Mt Kenya region and support from various political factions, including Members of County Assemblies and youth groups.
Political Implications
Kindiki’s nomination is seen as a strategic move by President Ruto to consolidate power and strengthen his administration.
If approved, he will not only serve as Ruto’s principal assistant but also chair a forum that connects the national government with Kenya’s 47 counties.
As this political saga unfolds, all eyes will be on the National Assembly’s upcoming vote to determine whether Kindiki will officially take up his new role as Deputy President.
