The tragic passing of Gerald Mwangi, known as Makanga Bae, has sparked significant controversy over the management of funds for his burial.
Mwangi, a conductor for Super Metro, died from multiple organ failure after an accident along Waiyaki Way.
His burial took place on October 23 amid allegations that Super Metro mismanaged the contributions collected for his funeral expenses.
Super Metro Responds to Allegations
In response to these claims, Super Metro’s chairman, Nelson Mwangi, issued a statement to clarify the situation. He said,
We want to clarify that the mother, aunt, and uncle of Gerald Mwangi came to our office and received the company’s contribution directly. Therefore, any other group formed to collect funds for the burial is not affiliated with Super Metro. While we appreciate the efforts of all those who stepped up to support the bereaved, we want to ensure the transparency of these contributions.

He also mentioned that they would investigate the matter to understand what occurred and ensure their employees receive respect and recognition.
Chief Inspector Defends Fund Distribution
Michael Muturi, Super Metro’s chief inspector, defended the company’s actions in an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke. He refuted allegations of mismanagement and stated,
I authorised the money contributed—KSh 63,000 by our staff to his wife. How can the family claim they weren’t married after being together for four years? It’s clear they just wanted the money. We handled everything, including settling the hospital bill, and any remaining amount will also go to his wife.

Widow Addresses Financial Misconduct Claims
Mwangi’s widow has distanced herself from claims of financial misconduct made by his family. She shared her experience:
I received KSh 63,000 prior to the burial, but Mwangi’s mother demanded the entire amount, which I subsequently handed over. During our meetings in Makongeni, Muturi ensured that every money was accounted for before the end of the meetings. I know for sure Muturi and the treasurer cleared the remaining bill because I was there when they paid around KSh 212,000. I received KSh 63,000 which I returned back to the mother.

She expressed her feelings about the situation:
I felt bad for the embarrassment they brought to his burial since he was a peaceful man.
