Let’s be real our phones have become our lifelines. From taking the perfect selfie to managing our work emails (or avoiding them), they go everywhere with us.
But, there are some places you should definitely not store your phone, even if you think it’s just “convenient.”
Here are seven spots you should avoid, for the sake of your phone’s health and yours too!
1. In Your Pocket
You might think it’s super handy to toss your phone in your pocket, but according to experts, your pocket is actually the worst place to store your phone.
Dr. Lilly Friedman, a medical expert, says that when phones are on and connected to a wireless network which we mostly do, radiation levels can be two to seven times higher in your pocket than when it’s in a purse or holster.
Radiation from your phone might mess with your DNA, and even affect male fertility. So, it’s not just about avoiding those awkward “phone vibrations” during dinner—it’s about your health!
2. In Your Bra
Ladies, we get it! you need somewhere to store your phone when you’re out and about. But keeping it in your bra, especially in a sports bra, can actually be a bad idea.
Not only could it lead to skin irritation (because, phones can be surprisingly dirty), but some research suggests a possible link between the radiation from your phone and breast cancer.
The jury’s still out on this one, but who wants to take that risk when there are plenty of better options for phone storage?
3. Under Your Pillow
Some people love their phones so much that they might even sleep with it right under your pillow. But, here’s why that’s a no-go:
Phones heat up, especially when charging, and this could lead to overheating or even a fire hazard. Plus, that LED light from your phone screen can mess with your melatonin production and your precious sleep.
So, if you like to get a good night’s rest, try leaving your phone on the nightstand—far from your face and far from your pillow!
4. Plugged In All the Time
It might seem like a good idea to plug your phone in for a boost, but leaving your phone plugged in after it’s fully charged could actually damage its battery.
The problem is, charging your phone too long leads to heat buildup, which can shorten the life of your phone’s battery.
To avoid the dreaded “battery’s not lasting as long” issue, unplug your phone once it’s fully charged and stop treating your charger like a permanent accessory.
5. Close to Your Face
We know you like to make calls, but keeping your phone really close to your face can lead to more than just awkward conversations.
Phones can transfer bacteria to your skin, making breakouts, irritation, and even wrinkles more likely. So, try using earphones or a headset to keep your phone away from your face. Your skin (and your wrinkles) will thank you.
Stay smart and keep your phone safe! And remember, the best place for your phone might just be away from your body—both for your health and for your phone’s longevity.
